This report summarizes the findings of the FEMA Mitigation Assessment Team (MAT) on the performance of one- and two-family residential buildings affected by the August 2023 Maui wildfires. It analyzes building damage patterns, construction types, and factors influencing survivability, such as structure hardening, defensible space, and maintenance. The report provides recommendations for resilient rebuilding and mitigation strategies to reduce wildfire risk in residential areas. It is intended to guide recovery, inform future construction practices, and support local officials and stakeholders in wildfire-prone communities.
